When it comes to practical cosmetology learning, there are several options in Detroit. High school students who want to get a jump on their cosmetology careers should look into the programs for 10th, 11th and 12th graders at Breithaupt Career & Technical Center. The programs include summer school, and will prepare students for state cosmetology certification and careers as hairstylists, manicurists and natural hair cultivation (braiding) experts. Cosmetology training on an 11-month full-time or a 21-month part-time (evening) basis, and a 14-week esthetics/skin care program utilizing Aveda products are available at the David Pressley School of Cosmetology, just outside of Detroit in suburban Royal Oak. Cosmetology, manicuring and esthetics programs are available at the Michigan College of Beauty in Waterford. For those interested in haircare salon management, an associate of applied science (AAS) is available through Mott Community College in Flint, 70 miles north of Detroit; Michigan licensed-haircare professionals will receive 22 credits toward the degree.
Cosmetologist jobs in Detroit are projected to increase 10.4% between 2002 and 2012, according to the Michigan Department of Labor Industry.
