Detroit Dental Schools & Programs A nationally top-ranked and ADA-accredited dental hygiene program is available through the University of Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry and offers students either a certificate in dental hygiene or a dental hygiene/liberal arts bachelor's. Graduates of both programs are eligible to take dental hygiene licensing examinations in any of the 50 states and the Registered Dental Assistant Examination in Michigan. Hands-on experience in clinical facilities and dental offices is part of the ADA-accredited certificate dental assistant program as well as the associate of science dental hygiene program at Detroit's Wayne County Community College. ADA-accredited associate of applied science (AAS) degrees are conferred in both the dental assisting and dental hygiene programs at Mott Community College in Flint, 70 miles north of Detroit. Mott also offers a basic dental assisting certificate, which can be applied toward the AAS degree. Completion of any of these dental assisting and dental hygiene programs makes students eligible to national and state licensing exams.

Dental career employment gains are projected for the Detroit metro area between 2002 and 2012, according to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. Dental assistants can expect 22.9% growth over the 10-year period, from 5,180 positions in 2002 to 6,370 positions in 2012. Dental hygienists can likewise expect 23.4% growth, from 4,580 jobs in 2002 to 5,650 in 2012. Dental laboratory technician jobs are expected to experience slower growth of 3.3%, from 310 positions in 2002 to 320 jobs in 2012. Positions for dentists are expected to experience steady 2.3% growth over the 10-year period, from 2,560 in 2002 to 2,620 in 2012.
