There are plenty of places for performing artists to train in Detroit. Marygrove College offers undergraduate programs in music and dance while the University of Detroit Mercy has a theatre program. Wayne State University offers performing arts education to aspiring musicians, dancers, and thespians.
Musicians thinking of moving to Detroit will be happy to hear the Labor Board employment projects indicate that there will be 104 new full-time jobs available by 2012. Half of these openings will be due to presently employed persons leaving their jobs, and the other half will be due to growth in the field (i.e., newly created positions). Similarly, employment for dancers is on the rise in the area, as the number of full-time jobs in dance is projected to increase by 9.4% in the same time frame.

Why Detroit is a Great Place to Study Performing Arts
As a city, Detroit had its moment in the limelight during the middle part of the last century when it was the automobile manufacturing capital of the country, but the money and momentum didn't come early enough or stay long enough for Detroit to develop strong network of performing arts organizations. The legacy has been left in fine buildings rather than top-ranked orchestras or ballet companies. For example, the Detroit Symphony has its home in Orchestra Hall, one of the finest concert halls in all of America. The opera has a permanent home in the Detroit Opera House, which it shares with touring ballet and theatre companies.
